Edinburgh-Is Leith a good place to live?

My partner has been offered a job in Edinburgh so we'll be moving. We've visited and were thinking about looking for accomodation in Leith. My friend from Edinburgh says I won't even feel safe walking around Leith in the day, that it's dirty and most flats have bad rodent infestation problems. I'd really like other people's opinions/experiences on the area.
