Moving to Edinburgh - recommended areas/developments?

Newington and Liberton are on bus routes to the centre of the city but I am unsure about routes to universities/colleges. Both ate fairly safe at night and have goodpubs/hotel for drining/eating. You might be best to buy rather than rent - first time buyer properties are at a premium right now.
